Job Description

Central Connecticut State University invites applications for a full-time Director of Marketing in the department of Marketing and Communications.  The position reports to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and has the primary responsibility for the planning and implementation of the University’s marketing program, with emphasis on admissions and fundraising.  The candidate should be experienced in using data to plan, implement plans, and to assess the effectiveness of strategies.  The Director will engage other university stakeholders in the development of a comprehensive marketing plan.  Candidates are expected to be committed to multiculturalism and working with a diverse student body.  Other duties include:

  • Designs and implements marketing strategies and plans (based on institutional goals, market characteristics, data, research, and budgeted resources), which highlight the University’s areas of differentiation as well as strengths and reinforce the University’s position among various stakeholder groups. 
  • Creates content for print, digital, web, social and emerging media channels.
  • Employs a range of marketing tools to achieve institutional goals.  These may include web and digital media, direct mail, telemarketing, advertising, database management, events, displays, brochures, flyers, and other relevant tools.
  • Optimizes electronic marketing efforts and helps the University understand return on its investment by implementing innovative web, email and social media strategies.
  • Utilizes data and data gathering strategies to plan and implement plans.  Assesses effectiveness through data collection and analysis.
  • Provides leadership and direction on tools, processes and systems to streamline functionalities and enhance office effectiveness.
  • Develops procedures for the conceptualization, development and production of publications and materials.
  • Working with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, oversees the annual marketing and communications budget including approval of expenditures as assigned.
  • In conjunction with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, oversees overall brand usage and implementation across campus to ensure brand cohesion and impact.
  • Oversees the design and production of promotional and informational materials.
  • Oversees the University Media Center, personnel and operations.  

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in marketing and/or communications
  • Proven experience in the formulation and implementation of marketing and/or communications strategies
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Commitment to serving a diverse student body

Credentials and/or experience substantially comparable to the above may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree
  • Five years of leaderships experience in marketing or communications at an institution of comparable size and complexity
  • Demonstrated successful experience in working collaboratively with relevant offices, working with multiple demands, short timelines, and prioritizing tasks
  • Three years of supervisor/manager experience at an institution of comparable size and complexity
  • Knowledge and experience developing and managing the execution of integrated marketing communications campaigns (e.g., advertising, media planning, direct marketing, e-marketing, all aspects of social media, branding, analytics and market research) to achieve institutional goals
  • Experience with planning, budgeting, and fiscal management in a complex organization
  • Demonstrated experience in shared governance and unionized environment
